Aston Villa v PSG on 8 December: the away-trip guide from Zurich
Away tickets, the compulsory ETA, passports, direct Zurich – Birmingham flights, getting to Villa Park: how to plan Aston Villa v PSG on 8 December 2026.
On Tuesday 8 December 2026, PSG play at Villa Park on matchday 6 of the Champions League league phase. Kick-off is at 8pm UK time, 9pm in Switzerland. Birmingham is under two hours' flight from Zurich, but the UK is in neither the EU nor Schengen: one forgotten document is enough to keep you on the ground. Here is what to sort out, and in what order.
Aston Villa v PSG, a familiar fixture
This is the third meeting between the clubs in eighteen months. In the 2025 Champions League quarter-finals, Paris won 3-1 at the Parc, then held on after losing 3-2 at Villa Park. On 12 August in Salzburg, PSG beat Villa again in the UEFA Super Cup (2-1), with goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Désiré Doué. Villa's equaliser came from Brian Madjo, a 17-year-old striker who gave the Paris defence plenty of trouble.
First things first: passport and ETA
You need two documents to enter the UK:
- A valid passport. Since 2021, the UK no longer accepts Swiss or EU identity cards, apart from a few exceptions tied to residence status. The ID card that gets you to Como or Paris will not do here.
- An Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Compulsory for Swiss and EU nationals, it has cost £20 since 8 April 2026 and is valid for two years. Without one, the airline will refuse to board you.
Tickets: go through PSG
UEFA rules require the home club to set aside at least 5% of its capacity for away fans. With Villa Park holding just over 42,000, the Paris allocation should exceed 2,000 tickets. They are sold through PSG's official ticketing platform, with priority for season-ticket holders and the most loyal members. UEFA also caps the price of these tickets: €50 at most last season.
The away section is in the north-east corner of the Doug Ellis Stand, on two tiers. The upper tier means climbing sixty-odd steps. Tickets on resale sites, often over £200, are almost always in home areas. You risk being turned away there, and you will not be with the Paris fans.
Getting there: direct from Zurich to Birmingham
SWISS flies direct from Zurich to Birmingham in under two hours, with frequency varying by season. Check the December schedule on swiss.com before booking time off. From the airport, the train reaches Birmingham New Street in the city centre in around ten minutes.
Aim to arrive the day before or early on matchday. On a December Tuesday, the city centre hosts the Frankfurt Christmas Market, open from 5 November to 24 December between Victoria Square and New Street. That is where most away fans spend the afternoon: there are no away pubs near the ground.
From New Street to Villa Park
- Train to Witton: about 10 minutes, every half hour. The station is a five-minute walk from the away end. The most direct option.
- Matchday shuttle: a special bus runs from Dudley Street, next to New Street. £5 return, paid to the driver.
- After the game, Witton trains are packed: walk a quarter of an hour to Aston station, which has more services. On foot, the city centre is about an hour away.
Getting home: one night in Birmingham
The game ends around 9.50pm local time, with no flights to Zurich after that. So plan to stay the night and fly back on Wednesday morning. Hotels around New Street and in Digbeth are the most convenient. Book a cancellable room as soon as ticket sales are announced: prices climb fast on Champions League nights.
The checklist
- Valid passport (an ID card is not enough)
- Approved ETA, applied for on GOV.UK
- Ticket bought through PSG's official platform
- Flight and hotel booked with a cancellation option
- Pounds or a card with no foreign fees: contactless works almost everywhere
- Scarf and shirt kept out of sight until the away section
Travel with the club
The committee is following PSG's ticket sales and will pass on the details to members. If a group trip is organised, it will appear in the events calendar.
